One of the most common questions I get when a couple is preparing for their engagement session is, “What do I wear for my engagement session?” I know coming up with outfits can seem so overwhelming so please allow me to help simplify the process for you!
1. Dress it up!
Wear that fabulous evening dress you’ve always wanted to take out on the town! I promise nothing is too dressy for photos- even if we’re shooting in the middle of an open field. Truly, I love cocktail dresses, tailored suits, heels, and all things dressy. For a lighter and airier feel, I recommend wearing pastel or neutrals. If you want something that has an ethereal feel, a flow dress or skirt is perfect. The movement of the fabric adds a whimsical and romantic vibe to your images that can’t be surpassed.
2. Keep it simple!
Ladies, I recommend wearing a solid colored dress. Feel free to add fun accessories such as a hat, gorgeous necklace, and heels! For the gentlemen, I suggest a suit that it tailored to fit you well, or a fitted dark wash pair of jeans. Pair this with a collared shirt that complements your fiancé’s dress, add a watch, nice shoes, and a tie and you will be all set! Bonus tip: For both ladies and gentlemen, we recommend avoiding prints that are smaller then a dime. These can get distorted in the camera and cannot be edited out.
3. Make sure your outfit fits well!
Ladies, make sure to wear an outfit that flatters the areas you love about yourself and diminishes any areas you are insecure about. For example, if you don’t love how your arms look in pictures, I don’t recommend a sleeveless dress or top for your session. If you feel like you’re having to suck in when wearing an outfit, it may be best to select another instead. You want to feel amazing and confident in your appearance! Also, make sure your outfits are pressed and wrinkle free!
4. Pick a maximum of two outfits!
I suggest a maximum of two outfits for your session because of possible time constraints. Most couples opt for one dressy outfit as well as one that is more casual! I’ll photograph your engagement ring while you’re changing outfits so make sure that it is clean and ready to go!
I hope these tips helped to simplify the process of planning your engagement session! I know getting your photos made can feel so overwhelming, but I know you’re going to do an amazing job. I’ll tell you exactly what to do so that you can feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera!
